During 2024, global full TEU volumes grew by 6.2% to 183.2 million TEU, according to (provisional) figures from Container Trades Statistics (CTS). Intercontinental cargoes increased by 6.8% to 121.8 million TEU, whilst intraregional volumes went up by a slower 5.1% to 61.3 million TEU.
The export container trade showed rises in all trade lanes, except for Europe. At plus 11.4%, the Far East was both percentage wise and by actual volume the main contributor to the trade growth ahead of Australasia (+9.4%) and sub-Saharan Africa (+8.4%).
With regards to containerised imports, there was growth across the board. A double-digit percentage rise was noted for North America, with substantial increases also seen for Europe and Australasia imports.
