Giant containerships radically change the port map

The global port map will be reshaped in the coming period by Ultra-Large Container Ships (ULCS), gradually consolidating their dominance in container shipping, displacing smaller categories and creating excess capacity.

The global shift to containerships over 18,000 TEUs, which are now the new “norm” in large shipyards, increases demands on port infrastructures internationally. The port of Piraeus – and specifically the Piraeus Container Terminal (PCT) – is a pioneer in this regard, as it was one of the first in the Mediterranean to make major investments to be able to accommodate ULCS, even before these types of ships even left the shipyards of Asia.

PCT, with a major investment program, managed to utilize depths in the port of up to 18 meters and equipped its piers with Super-Post-Panamax cranes, capable of handling up to 24 rows of containers in width.

The port of Piraeus has already managed to stand out as one of the most modern and strategic hubs.

This dynamic was confirmed by the arrival in 2023 of the containership “OOCL Piraeus”, 24,188 TEUs, one of the largest container ships in the world.

At the same time, the port of Thessaloniki is also entering the mega-ship game. The signing of the contract for the expansion of the 6th pier is expected within two weeks.
