Carrier’s financial performance overview 2025

An overview of the available financial figures for this year shows just how things are different for the carriers in comparison with 2024. Uncertainty, a dampening of demand and disruption along some key trades surely played a part here. Only three carriers managed to grow their revenues, Hapag Lloyd, RCL and SITC. In contrast, Yang Ming faced a reduction of 31%, whilst Evergreen earned 23% less.

The combined net profit reached USD 17.9 billion, compared to USD 40.6 billion in 2024 for those same carriers. Despite the stiff reduction, however, it is still a very respectable amount, especially when compared with all the losses they made during the 2010s. In absolute values, Cosco Shipping, Maersk, CMA CGM and Evergreen were the best performers, but taking into account their size, SITC and Wan Hai also did very well.

Nine carriers published sufficient information to be able to provide financial figures on a TEU basis. Six posted (much) weaker revenues per TEU, whilst for those who did not (Hapag-Lloyd, RCL and SITC), the gains were marginal. The biggest reduction was for ZIM, which earned USD 362 or 16% less per TEU than a year earlier.
