Piraeus Port is ready to recover the lost ground

The gradual resumption of routes through the Suez Canal is expected to contribute to the recovery of a significant part of the cargo lost in the port of Piraeus due to geopolitical turmoil.

According to PortEconomics data for the third quarter of 2025, the port of Piraeus shows a 2.4% drop in container traffic, however it remains in the top five of the 15 largest European ports, having handled 4.79 million TEUs in 2024. At the same time, Rotterdam remains at the top of the European ranking, with a traffic of 13.8 million TEUs in 2024, recording a 3% increase in the third quarter of 2025, confirming its role as a stable pillar of European trade.

Fall in November

According to data from Cosco Shipping Ports, 301 thousand TEUs were handled on a monthly basis from Piers II and III of the Piraeus Container Terminal in November, compared to 363 thousand TEUs in the corresponding month of 2024, recording a drop of 17%. This decline is recorded in a month that is traditionally characterized by increased cargo activity in view of the festive season. At an eleven-month level, the total container traffic from the port of Piraeus amounted to 3.6 million TEUs, compared to 3.8 million TEUs in the corresponding period of 2024, recording a decrease of 5.6%.

It is noted that the president of PPA S.A., Han Chao, speaking recently to “N”, estimated that the port of Piraeus has all the guarantees to gradually recover the container loads that were lost during the period of geopolitical turmoil. As he explained, the geographical location of Piraeus, in close proximity to the Suez Canal, has historically been one of the strongest strategic advantages of the port. At the same time, globally, Cosco Shipping Ports performed well in the first eleven months of 2025, with throughput at its 37 ports reaching 107 million TEUs (the basic unit of measurement in container shipping – equivalent to a 20-foot container), compared to 101 million TEUs in the same period last year, an increase of 6%. At a monthly level, globally, it also showed positive results, with throughput in November reaching 10.3 million TEUs, compared to 9.4 million TEUs in the same month last year – an increase of 9.7%.
