Iran and Oman are making progress in their talks on a new traffic regime for the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports, the two countries have reached a tentative agreement under which inbound ships would use a route running largely through Iranian territorial waters, while outbound vessels would transit an Omani-controlled lane. Iran is reportedly seeking to levy a service fee equivalent to 5 to 7% of the cargo’s value, while Oman is said to be proposing fees at roughly half that level. However, other reports suggest that the latest draft agreement may not include any transit fees or tolls, indicating that this issue remains under negotiation.
Meanwhile, hostilities continue. In the past seven days, at least three commercial vessels have been attacked in or near the Strait of Hormuz. These include two tankers, one of which suffered a projectile strike that damaged its engine room, and a general cargo vessel.
